Clyde torpedoes Gneisenau

Clyde torpedoes Gneisenau

20 June 1940, Norwegian Sea, off the Halten Bank

British success; Gneisenau torpedoed

Scharnhorst, holed by Acasta's torpedo, had been patched up at Trondheim and was to be sent home. To draw the British away, Gneisenau and Admiral Hipper sailed from Trondheim on 20 June 1940 as if heading for Iceland. That night, off the Halten Bank, the submarine Clyde hit Gneisenau in the bow with a torpedo, tearing a large hole in both sides. She turned back to Trondheim, and went home to Kiel for repairs that lasted until the end of the year.
