Battle of Badung Strait
19–20 February 1942, Badung Strait, off Bali
Japanese victory
Japan landed troops on Bali to take its airfield, and Rear Admiral Karel Doorman attacked the shipping that night in three separate waves. Only four Japanese destroyers stood between him and the transports, but the Allied ships arrived piecemeal. In the first wave the Dutch destroyer Piet Hein was torpedoed and sunk. In the second, Tromp and the American destroyers came through and were badly mauled, with Tromp and Stewart heavily hit; the Japanese destroyers Ōshio and Michishio were also damaged. The landing went ahead.
