Black Sea raid

Black Sea raid

29 October 1914, Sevastopol, Odessa, Novorossiysk and Feodosia

Ottoman success; the Ottoman Empire enters the war

Without a declaration of war, Admiral Souchon took the ex-German Yavuz and Midilli and the Ottoman fleet across the Black Sea and attacked Russian ports at dawn: Sevastopol, Odessa, Novorossiysk and Feodosia. A Russian gunboat and a minelayer were lost and merchant ships sunk. Russia declared war on 2 November, and Britain and France followed.
