Battle of Santiago de Cuba

Battle of Santiago de Cuba

3 July 1898, Off Santiago de Cuba

Decisive American victory

With the US Army closing on Santiago, Cervera was ordered to break out. His ships came out of the narrow harbour one at a time and turned west along the coast. The blockading squadron chased them down: every Spanish ship was sunk or run ashore within four hours, and Cervera was taken prisoner.
