Sinking of U-95

Sinking of U-95

28 November 1941, Western Mediterranean, south-west of Almería

Dutch success; U-95 sunk

In the autumn of 1941 Hitler ordered U-boats into the Mediterranean to help Rommel, and they had to slip past Gibraltar against the current at night. U-95 got through, and on the night of 27–28 November, on the surface off the Spanish coast, she met the Dutch submarine O 21, also on the surface and on her way to Gibraltar. The German boat closed in, unsure what she had found. O 21 dived and fired her torpedoes; one hit, and U-95 sank at once. O 21 picked up the twelve survivors, among them her captain, Gerd Schreiber.
