Sinking of U-744

Sinking of U-744

5–6 March 1944, North Atlantic, west of Ireland

Allied success; U-744 sunk

By 1944 the Canadian escort groups had the training and equipment they had lacked in 1942. On 5 March escort group C2, escorting convoy HX 280, found U-744 and held her down for more than 30 hours, dropping hundreds of depth charges, until she was forced to surface on the afternoon of 6 March. Her crew abandoned ship under fire, and a whaler from the corvette Chilliwack put a boarding party aboard, which took off code books and equipment before she sank. Most of the U-boat's crew were picked up.
