Sinking of Spearfish

Sinking of Spearfish

1 August 1940, North Sea, west of southern Norway

German success; Spearfish sunk

Spearfish, which had crippled Lützow in April, was crossing the North Sea on the surface to patrol off Norway when U-34 sighted her on 1 August 1940 and hit her with a torpedo. She sank at once. U-34 picked up the only survivor, Able Seaman William Pester, who spent the rest of the war as a prisoner. U-34 was coming home from a patrol in which she had sunk the destroyer Whirlwind and several merchant ships.
