Air attack off Le Verdon

Air attack off Le Verdon

24 August 1944, Mouth of the Gironde, off Le Verdon

Allied success; T24 and Z24 sunk

By late August 1944 the last German destroyer and torpedo boat on the Atlantic coast, Z24 and T24, were trapped at the mouth of the Gironde. On 24 August rocket-firing Beaufighters of 236 Squadron RAF and 404 Squadron RCAF attacked them off Le Verdon. T24 sank with 18 men; Z24 was so badly holed that she sank alongside the quay the next day. Nothing of the German surface fleet in western France survived.
