Bombardment of Dikson

Bombardment of Dikson

27 August 1942, Dikson, at the mouth of the Yenisei

Soviet success; the landing was called off

Warned by Sibiryakov, the Soviet port of Dikson got ready. Admiral Scheer arrived in the early hours of 27 August 1942 meaning to land a party, destroy the port and seize papers on the ice. She found the armed steamers Semyon Dezhnev and Revolyutsioner in the harbour and set both on fire, and shelled the radio station and buildings. But two 152-mm guns, which had been waiting on the quay to be shipped elsewhere, fired back, and after about forty minutes Scheer drew off into the fog. Both Soviet ships were working again within days. Scheer returned to Narvik on 30 August, and the Germans never sent a surface ship to the Kara Sea again.
