Action off the Île de Batz

Action off the Île de Batz

26 April 1944, English Channel, off the north coast of Brittany

Allied success; T29 sunk

Before D-Day the Allies set out to clear the German torpedo boats from the western Channel. On the night of 25–26 April 1944 T24, T27 and T29 had been laying mines off the Sept-Îles when the cruiser Black Prince and the destroyers Ashanti, Athabaskan, Haida and Huron caught them by radar. The torpedo boats ran west. T27 and T24 were hit but got away, while T29 lost her steering, and the destroyers circled her, firing, for over an hour before she sank. Ashanti and Huron collided in the dark.
