Action off Les Sables-d'Olonne

Action off Les Sables-d'Olonne

14–15 August 1944, Bay of Biscay, off Les Sables-d'Olonne

Allied victory; the German convoy broken up

As the Americans broke out of Normandy, the Allies sent cruisers and destroyers down the Biscay coast to stop German ships escaping from the Atlantic ports. On the night of 14–15 August 1944 the cruiser Mauritius and the destroyers Ursa and Iroquois caught a small convoy off Les Sables-d'Olonne: the aircraft repair ship Richthofen, a Sperrbrecher, two minesweepers and the torpedo boat T24. T24 laid smoke and fired torpedoes, which missed, and was hit once. The Allied ships sank the Sperrbrecher, set Richthofen on fire, drove one minesweeper ashore and badly damaged the other.
