HMS Eurotas vs Clorinde

HMS Eurotas vs Clorinde

25–26 February 1814, Western approaches to the Channel

British victory; Clorinde taken

Clorinde, the frigate that had left Renommée to her fate at Tamatave, was raiding British shipping in the western approaches in the winter of 1813–14, and had just sunk the Falmouth packet Townshend. On 25 February the new 38-gun Eurotas, under John Phillimore, caught her and the two fought broadside to broadside for two hours and twenty minutes, until both were dismasted. Eurotas lost 20 killed and 30 wounded, Phillimore among the wounded; Clorinde 40 killed and 80 wounded. Both crews rigged jury masts in the night and Eurotas resumed the chase in the morning, but by then the frigate Dryad and the brig-sloop Achates had come up. Clorinde struck after the first shot from Dryad, which towed her into Portsmouth. She served the Royal Navy as HMS Aurora.
