Battle of Moon Sound

Battle of Moon Sound

16 October – 3 November 1917, Moon Sound and the Gulf of Riga

German victory

Part of Operation Albion, the German invasion of the Estonian islands, fought while the Russian fleet was in revolutionary turmoil. The dreadnoughts König and Kronprinz broke into the Gulf of Riga and fought the two old Russian battleships, Slava and Grazhdanin, the former Tsesarevich, in Moon Sound. Slava was holed and scuttled in the channel. The Germans lost a torpedo boat and several minesweepers to mines, and two battleships were mined.
