Battle of St Lucia
15 December 1778, Grand Cul de Sac, St Lucia
British victory; St Lucia held
Rear-Admiral Barrington had landed troops on St Lucia and taken it when d'Estaing arrived from Martinique with nearly twice his strength and 9,000 troops. Barrington anchored his ships in a tight line across the mouth of the Grand Cul de Sac, with the transports behind them, and d'Estaing twice sailed past firing and was beaten off. The French troops he landed were bloodily repulsed by the British on the Vigie peninsula three days later, and at the end of the month d'Estaing gave up. St Lucia became the base from which Rodney watched the French at Fort Royal.
