Sino-French War

1884–1885

France and Qing China fought over Tonkin, in northern Vietnam. Admiral Courbet's squadron, already anchored in the Min River in peacetime, destroyed China's Fujian Fleet at Fuzhou in an afternoon. The next year his torpedo launches sank a Chinese frigate at Shipu.
