Russo-Turkish War

1877–1878

The Ottoman navy had powerful ironclads; Russia's Black Sea fleet, still recovering from the Crimean War, had almost none. Russia answered with small torpedo craft. Spar-torpedo launches sank an Ottoman monitor on the Danube, and at Batum Stepan Makarov's boats made the first sinking of a ship by self-propelled torpedo.
