Paraguayan War

1864–1870

Paraguay against the Triple Alliance of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, the bloodiest war in South American history. It was fought up the Paraná and Paraguay rivers. Brazil's navy won control of the rivers at Riachuelo in 1865, and in 1868 its ironclads ran past the great river fortress of Humaitá.
