Battle of Monte Santiago

Battle of Monte Santiago

7–8 April 1827, Off Ensenada, Río de la Plata

Brazilian victory; the best Argentine ships lost

Brown tried to break out of the river with his four best ships to raid Brazilian trade at sea. Off Monte Santiago, near Ensenada, the brigs República Argentina and Independencia ran aground on a bank, and the Brazilian squadron came up and pounded them for two days. Independencia struck and República was destroyed; Brown, wounded, got away in the schooner Sarandí. It left the Brazilians in command of the river for the rest of the war.
