Chincha Islands War

1864–1866

Spain's Pacific squadron seized Peru's guano-rich Chincha Islands, and Peru and Chile went to war with Spain. Chile captured a Spanish schooner at Papudo; the Spanish fleet, led by the ironclad Numancia, shelled Valparaíso and fought the forts at Callao. Numancia then sailed home westward, the first ironclad to go round the world.
