Rebuilt as a heavy cruiser

Her fifteen 6.1-inch guns in triple turrets were swapped for ten 8-inch guns in twin turrets, as planned from the start: the treaty limits on heavy cruisers had been dodged by building her as a light cruiser.

Built as a light cruiser and regunned as a heavy cruiser. Fought at Sunda Strait. Rammed her sister Mikuma at Midway and was badly bombed, but got home. Sunk at Surigao Strait in 1944.
